The life and work of Yogacharya B.K.S. lyengar are of epic proportions. Born on December 14, 1918 in Bellur, Kolar District, Karnataka, India, He at the young age of fifteen in Mysore was initiated into yoga. In spite of suffering untold pains of tortured nerves and bruised muscles, he gained proficiency in a large number of asanas in an incredibly short time. Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar has made it possible for ordinary human beings to experience the wisdom of the yoga sutras of Sage Patanjali. Iyengar Yoga has shown and taught how all the eight aspects of astanga yoga are integrated. His comprehensive books Light on Yoga and Light on Pranayama , The Art of Yoga have been hailed as the "Bibles of Yoga" His artistic performances have elicited such epithets as “Supreme Artist” “Divine Gymnast” and “Michelangelo of Yoga”. He received innumerable number of Titles a …few are… Yogi Ratna, Yoganga Shikshaka Chakravarti, Rajyotsava Award , Patanjali Award, Vasistha Award, Padma Sri, Abhinava Patanjali Maharshi have been conferred upon him. In August 1988, the Ministry of Federal Star Registration, U.S.A. announced that a Star in the northern hemisphere has been named after Yogacharya B.KS. lyengar. He has become a legend in his own time.
